My mom, a cat rescuer with lots of unwanted cats uses these for when she fosters kittens, and she lives in Florida. I am in Michigan and one of my 4 cats is older with thin fur, so I figured I'd get one of these things and try it out.
It is made of hard plastic, no worries of cat nails or punctures going through it. It does come with its own cover, all of them should because there is a warning on the disk that you have to use it with a cover....still I bought another cover, duh.
In 4 minutes a 1000 watt oven heats it up and it stays warm during the night, particularly if you put it under a blanket. I can't imagine my cats sleeping on it with just its cover.
Amazon has the best price for this, I shopped around. I would happily buy another one and probably will in the future.

nice, but the product comes with one. However, probabably good to have a spare.

This pads heats well and looks just like the picture. I didn't like it too well because it is hard as a rock. My puppy had more fun tearing the velcro cover off. He never would sleep on it. However, I gave it my sister and her cat likes it very much.

Pad is nice, but I didn't need to buy. The Sungglesafe Heatpad that I bought at the same time came with a cover which I didn't know when I bought this one. It is great if you want a second one or the original is damaged, etc.
