Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The BDP-S350 models support BonusView (picture-in-picture) featured on some of the Blu-ray Disc theatrical releases. The BDP-S350 models are BD-Live ready featuring an Ethernet port for an easy firmware update and access to Internet-based interactive content features. They also feature an external port for local storage, so users can add optional flash-based memory. The players feature 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output. They are compatible with most standard DVDs and feature 1080p upscaling through an HDMI connection to capable HDTV sets, improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries. The BDP-S350 models offer 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD and Dolby digital plus decoding and bit-stream output, as well as dts-HD high resolution audio and master audio bit-stream output. The players support AVCHD discs encoded with x.v.Color (xvYCC) technology, an international standard for wide color space reproduction. The standard expands the current data range of video by about 1.8 times, allowing the players to output more natural and vivid colors similar to what the human eye can actually see. The players also feature compatibility with an array of video formats, including BD-R/RE (BDMV and BDAV modes), DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW (video mode), CD, CD-R/RW (CD-DA format), and JPEG on DVD/CD recordable media.

5 out of 5 stars BD350   November 19, 2008
This is my first Blu-Ray and I love it. Boots a little slow but I expected that. Picture and sound are awesome. I used HDMI connection so there is nothing to hooking it up.

5 out of 5 stars Sony BDP-S350 review   November 19, 2008
The first unit I ordered was delivered well short of the time I expected. When I opened the box I noted the original packing carton appeared to have been dropped as one corner of the box was damaged. When I opened the carton, the plastic cover on the front of the unit had been broken off. I got on-line for return instructions and the unit was picked up the next day. A few days later, the replacement unit arrived. No damage to the carton (original packaging) this time and the unit works perfectly. I have been very pleased with the upconvert ability for standard DVD's as the playback has been fantastic. Aside from the damage to the first unit, I am very pleased with both the player it's self, and the expediant way Amazon handled immediately shipping the replacement unit. I would have no problem recommmending this unit to others.

3 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad and the Ugly   November 19, 2008

The Good:

Excellent picture quality, loaded with deep blacks and excellent contrast and color richness. Wonderful upscaling of normal DVD's too, the best I have seen, even better than the Oppo. (I have 3 Oppos) Blu-Ray quality is outstanding. Spin up times for discs is lighting fast, same as a normal DVD.

The Bad:

No slow motion. No frame advance. No clear forward or backward search feature. The picture skips in 4 second bursts or 8 second bursts and so on the faster you search forward, so it is agonizing to watch TV shows on this player and try to search through the commercials. Also if you want to see a scene over again or slow things down to understand what happened in a fast or complicated scene, forget it, this player has no such capability, it is just a "player only."

The Ugly:

The USB port that you are supposed to plug a micro drive into so you can take advantage of BD is so recessed into the back of the player and the opening so narrow that no micro drive I have found is narrow enough to fit into it. The only way to plug into the slot is to buy an additional "extra narrow" extender cable to plug into the slot, then you have to plug the micro drive into the extender cable. Pretty bad design flaw. Duh, Sony!

Conclusion:

If you want top notch Blu-ray quality with superior upscaling of normal DVD's and are willing to accept that all this player does is play discs, you can do nothing more, and if you are willing to accept that you will have to buy accessories to get a micro drive to work on this player so you can use the BD feature, then for the price, this player is impossible to beat. But if you want a full featured player that can let you have full control of your DVD's then you will need to look elsewhere, this is a "player only."

Unit failed after 2 hours of use, with a fan failure.

The only positive thing, was the outstanding response from Amazon. The return process was simple to follow and very efficient.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome quality at an awesome price!!   November 17, 2008
This is my first blu-ray & I absolutely love it. Hook up was easy. Set up was a piece of cake. It basically walked you through. Picture quality is incredible. I can't believe the clarity. Watched Transformers & The Predator in blu-ray & was blown away. But when I watched Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D I was left with my jaw dropping. I think what most impressed me was when i put in Rambo in standard def. It truly looked like hd. The quality was unbelieveable. I have a Toshiba 42" 1080i DLP & I set the player for 1080i & the quality is tremendous. DO NOT BE DETERRED IF YOU DON"T HAVE A 1080p TV YET. What I have is working great!!!

I shopped around on-line for blu-ray players & read numerous reviews because I wanted a good bang for my buck considering this was my first purchase. Every site had this priced at $300 except for Amazon. I got mine for $223 plus free shipping. I was to receive it in 3 to 5 business days & it showed up in LESS THAN ONE DAY!!! Incredible!!! Thank you Amazon!!!
